Description of Slide 2-Production

Mark Schwahn, the creator of One Tree Hill, originally planned to make a movie titled Ravens, the name of the show's High school basketball team. However, he was quickly convinced that it had the potential to succeed as a television series. Schwahn decided that OTH would do well as a television show because he had an endless amount of creative story lines that he felt would be better suited for a television series. Mark was definitely right in his executive decision to create a television series from his idea because it has become a phenomenon. Schwann drew the idea for this show from his own personal experiences in high school. He grew up in a small town and was on the basketball team. Both of these ideas are very much incorporated into the setting of the show (Williams, Don (November 26, 2006). "Exclusive Interview: Mark Schwahn, Creator/Head Writer of One Tree Hill (Part 3). Buddytv.com. Retrieved January 29, 2012). One Tree Hill has previously received financial backing from several corporations including AT & T, Sunkist, and Starburst ("Fans can "text" outcome of TV storyline" Textually.org. April 20, 2005) (Barbara Zack (2006). Best practices in branded entertainment: case studies and accountability. Lulu.com. p. 132. Retreived January 29, 2012). The show receives money in return for promoting the corporation’s items within the episodes.

Description of Slide 3-Representation

Themes are one of the main ways that One Tree Hill has been represented throughout its entire nine-season run. Some of the themes that have been portrayed in the show since the beginning include love, friendship, rivalries, and betrayal. Two of the most prominent themes of the show are basketball and romance. The theme of basketball has allowed the show to attract male viewers (Solon, Neal (February 1, 2006). "One Tree Hill: The Complete Second Season." DVD Verdict). The creator of One Tree Hill said, “"For us, that's what basketball was. It was never about playing basketball, but it was about what was happening to the people when this game or tournament was approaching” (Williams, Don (November 26, 2006). "Exclusive Interview: Mark Schwan, Creator/Head Writer of One Tree Hill (Part 3). Buddytv.com. Retrieved January 29, 2012). The show involves a love triangle romance between three of the main characters which creates quite a bit of drama within the plot. The show’s producer Joe Davola and creator Mark Schwahn have previously agreed on the fact that some elements of their show work well together because of the mottos “sex sells” and “skin to win.” Many of One Tree Hill’s storylines are fueled by sex and the use of drugs.

Description of Slide 4-Distribution

The television series that millions of people across the country have come to love, One Tree Hill, is distributed in the United States by the CW Television Network. The show used to be broadcasted by the WB until their corporation merged with UPN to form the CW. The CW continues to distribute One Tree Hill to televisions everywhere across the country, targeted towards audiences who are teenagers and young adults.

Slide 5-Reception

Description of Slide 5-Reception

Some critics of One Tree Hill have compared the series to other big hits in the industry including The OC and Dawson’s Creek. However, the critics did add that One Tree Hill has a more masculine appeal than The OC and Dawson’s Creek. All three shows focus on relationships and even have many of the same themes, but One Tree Hill incorporates basketball into their storylines which has given it a masculine edge. One Tree Hill definitely appeals to the male audience but the boys who watch it would probably not admit it voluntarily (McLoone, Tracy (September 29, 2003). "One Trick Hill." PopMatters. Retrieved January 29, 2012). As previously mentioned, sexual activity is highly involved within the storylines of One Tree Hill. One of the main characters, Haley, becomes pregnant at the mere age of seventeen while another regular cast member, Brooke, always seems to be having sex with different boys. Critics say that the show refuses to lie out the harsh consequences of both becoming a teen mom and the risk of STD’s. Author Emily B. Anzice notes that the use of condoms was only used twice during three entire seasons of the show. Almost all of the cast members seem to be very sexually experienced when they are supposed to be sixteen or seventeen years old which glamorizes the idea of becoming sexually active at a young age to the audience (Anzicek, Emily B. (2007). I've Got the Good Kid: Teen Sex and the WB Network. ProQuest. pp. 119-120). Contrary to what the critics say of One Tree Hill, it is known as one of the fastest growing television series of all time. Their audience is extremely faithful and they can’t seem to get enough. The show brings in an average of 3.3 million viewers each week. From the cast to the music, One Tree Hill is loved among teenagers everywhere.

Description of Slide 6-Socialization

One Tree Hill is a highly socialized show because of the amount of collaboration and teamwork goes into creating each storyline for the episodes. Not every episode has the same writers; some are written by the creator Mark, others are written by script writers, and a few are even written by one of the main characters in the show, Chad Michael Murray. One Tree Hill is becomes socialized with the help of the CW network. The CW airs an episode of the show once a week throughout the duration of each season. The amount of episodes that air depends on the contract that is signed between the network and the One Tree Hill team. The number of episodes usually falls somewhere between thirteen and twenty-two. The distribution of complete seasons of the show on DVD has proved to be a very successful way to become a social medium. The DVDs have also proved to be a huge help in gaining new fans of the show. The consumers that buy the DVDs then share them with their friends and family members. I know this because my friends and I have shared the seasons with one another during high school. The first time I saw the show was through a DVD of season one. I've been hooked ever since! I also know that fans all around the country do the same because they have blogged about it the show's main blog.

Description of Slide 7-Activity

A lot of activity goes into the creation of each episode of One Tree Hill. The team of writers comes to together and collaborates ideas to come up with interesting and new storylines for the show. The team of writers are always coming up with new ideas that the audience has never seen before. This keeps the audience on their toes at all times and helps gain the respect of critics. The director of One Tree Hill directs the actors in such a way that helps them to relate to their particular character. Two of the main actors, Chad Michael Murray and Bethany Joy Galeotti, have made statements saying they find themselves very similar to their characters in the show. Chad Michael Murray, who plays Lucas Scott, has said that he went through a similar situation of abandonment like his character in One Tree Hill did. Like Lucas, Murray's father abandoned him when he was very young (Building a Winning Team: The Making of One Tree Hill (Documentary). Bethany Joy Galeotti has said that she was exactly like her character Haley in high school because she was a nerd and tutor just like her. Bethany Joy also took up singing as a hobby in high school just like Haley in OTH ("Bethany Joy Lenz sings for "One Tree Hill." Associated Press/MSNBC. November 14, 2005. Retrieved January 29, 2012.These similarities between the actors and their characters are definitely one of the main reasons this show has been such a hit. One Tree Hill is known for their ability to select the perfect music to go along with the theme of each episode. The music selection sets the show apart from its main competition shows, like the classic Dawson's Creek and even more recent, The OC. Mark Schwan has noted that each episode of the show is named after a song that relates to what happens in a specific episode. The songs that are played throughout the episodes play a huge role in the movement of scenes and the emotions of the show (Williams, Don. "Exclusive Interview: Mark Schwahn, Creator of "One Tree Hill." BuddyTV.com. Exclusive Interview: Mark Schwahn,Creator of 'One Tree Hill." BuddyTV.com. Retrieved January 29, 2012).

Description of Slide 8-Ecology

Tree Hill, North Carolina is actually a fictional town; however, the filming of the show takes place in Wilmington, North Carolina. One Tree Hill is shot in several different locations in Wilmington, all of which play a huge role in the storylines of the show. Some of the key locations include the River Court, the Tree Hill Bridge, Tree Hill High, and Clothes Over Bros fashion boutique. The show contains many scenes at the River Court, where basketball is played and relationships develop. A few very important scenes take place at the River Court. The Tree Hill Bridge is significant because of a tragic accident that occurs there. A few of the characters in the show always went to the Bridge when they needed time to think alone. Tree Hill High plays a significant role during the character’s high school years. A school shooting and a murder happen at the high school. The school shooting, which occurred in the third season, definitely proves the show to be a big-time drama TV show. It really gave the show the edge it needed to capture the attention of its fans. The High School also serves as a key location in later seasons after the characters have graduated. A main character, Brooke Davis, runs Clothes Over Bros fashion boutique. A robbery and assault occur at this location. As you can see, locations are a key factor in the operation of One Tree Hill.

Hey Kellie - thanks for posting! It looks good so far - I'll have more detailed comments for you in the next day or two. I already like how you've addressed the ecology of location - looking forward to reading more. --Ryan

HI Kellie, First of all I wanted to say I loved your cover page. I really like how you incorporated the “CHAT” aspect into the title, making it look like it belonged there. As far as your information goes I think you did a great job researching. Your slides show the right amount of information and the additional comments underneath helped clarify any questions I had. In addition, I really liked how the pictures you used correlated directly with what you were trying to say. These pictures kind of brought life to your words and made it more clear to what you were talking about. Lastly, I liked how all of your slides had a consistent design. It made them seem more connected, flowing together. The one thing in particular that I liked was the black on white contrast. By using the black on white it makes it so much easier to read and the words really do stick out. If I were to go back over your slides the only suggestion I can really think of, and I didn’t even think of this until I saw Matt’s presentation, would be to have a final slide with citation information. I know you cited within your slides but I think by having that information as a last slide makes it easier for the reader to find information on the topic using the same resources you did. Overall, great job and great research! It looks like you took a lot of time on this project!

Hey Kellie,

One Tree Hill that was one that I actually did not even consider doing. I kind of forgot about the show with all of the other teen’s shows that have been coming out. For your first Cultural Historical Activity Theory map you did a really good job. Your designs and information on each slide were all good. You did not over crowd the slides with pictures and too much information making it difficult to read and understand. You gave a good amount of information under each slide which was a major plus. One thing that was a problem was the first slide on production the font was really small and made it difficult to read without squinting.(or maybe it could be just my computer) Other than that your representation on what a CHAT map should look like. You gave enough information after each slide so that people like me who either forgot about the show or never seen it would easily follow along. I almost forgot – if you would have added an additional slide for only citations it would have been a really nice touch. After reviewing your CHAT map it reminded me of the TV series and made it easier for me to refresh my mind about it and follow along with the concept of the series. Once again good overall job on your first CHAT map it was a really good one.

lspatte 3 months ago

Hey Kellie! I think you did a good job with creating your Chat map. I never watched One Tree Hill before, this was something I saw on TV and turned to the next channel, but I like your title page. I like the layout of your slides. You put all the information on the left side and provided pictures on the other side. I like how you put the sources under each slide and provided more citations at the bottom. I think that you provided a little too much information on the slides and also the description. I think you could have cut some of the information out from your slides. The thing about providing a lot if information is that the reader know what the show was about but at the same time readers don’t like to see slides where they have to read a lot of information. I think that the font and color you picked was a good choice you can see the information really well. Even though I think your slides provided too much information, I was able to follow along with what happened in this TV series. It made me want to sit down and watch it one day. Overall I think you did a good job. It looks like you really researched this TV series and wanted your readers to understand what happened in this series, and who the characters were, and who made this TV series! Good Job!

Hi Kellie! I think you did a great job on your CHAT PowerPoint presentation. I do not watch One Tree Hill but have a lot of friends that do and they love it. After reading your slides, I now have a better understanding about the show and what it’s all about. All of your slides were well organized and easy to interpret. Also, the pictures went along well with what you were saying. On each slide you made the main points and then did a good job explaining more in depth under each slide. I can really tell you did a lot of research on this project and put a lot of time and effort into it. Although, some slides you may have put a little too much information. Making the main points short and to the point makes it easier to follow, however for the most part you did a good job of making it easy to follow. All the slides had a URL citation but it might make it easier if they were all in one place as well. Also, the font and background went really well together. Having the white writing on the black background made the words really stand out and easy to read. Overall, I thought It was a very good PowerPoint presentation. Great Job!!

I think you did a really great job on your CHAT map. You followed the guidelines very well and it definitely shows in your map! I like how your slides were clear and consistent throughout the entire CHAT map. I also thought that each of your slides were easy to follow and highlighted the more important information for each aspect. Your explanation for each slide clearly stated how each of the 7 aspects was shown in the television series and they were detailed with great information to allow the reader to gain a better understanding. I think that the pictures you provided helped to set the tone and give a better understanding of what each slide was going to be about. In addition, I liked how you added the URLs to each slide to allow the reader to see where you got your information from. This map shows that you put in a lot of time and effort into both creating the slides and comments and into researching the different components of the CHAT map. Even though I have never personally watched the show, I have to say that your CHAT map made me want to start watching the series! Very well done!

Kellie,

So I have to start off by saying I absolutely love One Tree Hill! I recently met Chad Michael Murray so I am a big fan of your presentation. Your use of pictures were great because they showed more than one season. I also loved your reception slide comparing the show to Dawson's Creek and The O.C., I never knew they were the fastest growing television series of all time. It was also nice to see that you went into detail after each slide, giving more information even though your slides gave a lot of information as well. Each slide was different from the last and that made it more interesting. I really have nothing bad to say, it was easy to read, easy to understand, and it was very interesting too. Great job!

Wabauer 3 months ago

Hey Kellie, I think this was presented very well along the lines of attractiveness and interesting information. You sold the show very well. Being someone who has never heard of or seen this show, I was thoroughly prompted to go and see an episode. I was attracted to the white on black writing, the font style, the special borders around the pictures, the pictures themselves, even the titles. They were great and easy to follow along. The descriptions added the extra information a non-viewer like me really needed to keep track of where you were going. One piece of criticism would be that it took me longer than I needed to read the presentation and get an idea of what it was about. You should slim down your information enough to have the viewer get a gist of the TV series instead of explaining everything too thoroughly like you did. With that said, don’t get rid of nearly all your information. That would not be ok. Too much information is better than too little. But that was the only aspect of your presentation that stands between you and perfection. Great job!

bmcleary 3 months ago

Hey Kellie,

I really loved your CHAT map. I love One Tree Hill and have been watching it from day one and I am so sad it’s the last season! I could tell that you were really interested in the show and definitely saw you knew what you were talking about. It was obvious that you really researched the show and found some really interesting facts about it. I had no clue that it was supposed to be a movie. I thought it was really clever of you to create a slide with broad information but then right below give a detailed description of each one of your bullet points. This method made it really clear for me to understand and probably made it a lot easier for people who are not One Tree Hill fans. Your project was so good that I really don’t have any constructive criticism for you but maybe to explain some the characters that you mentioned. For example when you said that the creator of the show most identified with Mouth maybe mention the characters personality and what he brings to the series. Overall I really liked your project! You did an awesome job!

Hi Kellie,

I am definitely a one tree hill fan, so i was really excited about viewing your CHAT map. You did a great job with everything. You included everything that I would have included in the CHAT map and so much more. The pictures went along very nice with the presentation as well. One thing, you did include A LOT , but i definitely agree that having too much information is 10 times better than having not enough information. Overall, great job. Keep up the good work.

heatherhanney 3 months ago

Hey Kellie,

You did a very nice job on your presentation. I love the pictures you included and i feel they connected very well with your descriptions. I also really liked how you went in depth about the shows beginning and before beginning also. You did a great job at explaining the show and i fully believe someone who had not seen the show would fully understand it after seeing your presentation. I find it interesting how you choose to incorporate the music of the show into your slides and im really glad you did because its important part of the series. Some things that could be added to make your presentation a little more fuller is adding the names of the original eight cast mates that you mention in the first slide so when you use there names later in the presentation readers have something to connect to.Maybe you can even include pictures of the characters you talk about because that too can help your readers. I also like how your overall presentation is clean and simple with the white words on the black backdrop i feel it makes the reader concentrate on the words and emphasizes your point. Your slide descriptions are very well written and include lots and lots of quality information. Overall you did a very good job

Hey Kellie, I am in love with One Tree Hill so of course I liked the power point from the beginning. The title was very creative and I liked how it related to the CHAT assignment. I love that you had such great descriptions under all of your slides! You worded them so well and kept my interest throughout the whole PowerPoint although the only thing I would suggest would be to summarize them a bit more because it did involve a lot of reading. I really like how you included the quotes “sex sells” and “skin to win” as well because any one who kept up with the show has heard this before. Your power point was really simple but you spiced it up with pictures! I like that you didn’t overdue each slide and that you put pictures that really related to the point you were making! Overall I think you did amazing on your power point and I enjoyed looking at it!

**Housekeeping**

- Presentation Notes

- Use of Citation

I like the way you've included URL citations at the end of each section along with in-text citations within your presentation. This tells us which information came from which source while giving your viewers an opportunity to find more information about *One Tree Hill.*

In your URL citations, you'll want to make sure that your URL's link directly to the source of the image rather than the Google page on which that image is archived.

**Production**

- Describing how it's produced

- Acknowledgement of creators

- Describing the research done by the authors

Your description of Mark Schwahn and how his high school experiences informed the show lets us see how an author generates ideas.

Also, I like that you included the sources of financial backing. This gives us an idea of how much money it cost to put the show together. If you could also find the dollar amounts, that could be interesting, too, though I think the names alone give a good idea.

The variety of locations you describe in Ecology reveals a bit about how much work goes into shooting each episode, and I like how you descrive what each location is used for.

**Genre Conventions**

- Identifying the genre

- Describing the genre conventions

- Showing how these conventions are used.

You've touched on genre in describing how *One Tree Hill* is more masculine than other similar shows, and you'll also want to go a bit more in-depth here. Does the follow the conventions of similar shows? What about this show made it better-suited for TV than a one-time movie? One avenue you might try would be to look at the music and how it's similar or different from other shows, particularly given the important role it plays in Activity.

To build on this further, you might want to talk a bit more about how the locations mentioned in Ecology relate to the sets of other similar shows. The event of a school shooting, in particular, carries a lot of weight, and this could reveal quite a bit about the genre.

**Social Activity**

- Describing social and physical distribution

- Discussing cultural reception

Your section on Reception is very well-researched and important, especially given the somewhat controversial nature of the show's topics. The variety of critics you've cited and their respective quotes gives us a solid view of how *One Tree Hill* fits within today's culture of sexually active teens, showing that the critics find it distasteful while audiences still "can't seem to get enough." To further support this, you'll want to talk about just how large the audience is, and then talk about whether there are audience members who are creating fan pages or blogs which support the show despite the critical reviews.

In Socialization, the description of how seasons and numbers of shows are negotiated helps us understand the primary source for audiences. In describing how DVD's bring in a larger audience, it would be good to saw how this works (for example, describing who buys DVD's, and then who they share those DVD's with. Also, how do we know? And this would be a perfectly all right place to include your own personal experiences, if that could help us understand the typical experience a little better.)

**Audience**

- Identifying the intended audience

- Discussing how genre coventions are used to attract that audience

- Indicating audience reception.

Your Representation slide nicely illustrates the ways in which the producers are using basketball, personal interests, and mottos like "sex sells" and "skin to win" in order to attract a larger audience.

The Distribution slide identifies the *One Tree Hill* audience, of teens and young adults, but it would also be good to show how many people within this age group are following the show. Your points in Reception about how the show has a more masculine appeal than *Dawson's Creek* and *The OC* help us see how the *One Tree Hill* audience will differ, and this could give a good place to talk about how individual teens are taking in the show. Describing how the actors are similar to their characters in your Activity section starts in this direction, showing us oen of the major reasons teens repond well to the show. I would recommend being more specific. How exactly was Joy Galeotti like Haley? What was the situation of abandonment that Lucas went through with which Chad Michael Murray can relate?

Hey Kellie, I was very impressed right away when I clicked on your chat map. The first thing I noticed is how well all of the slides flow together based on the colors. Everything goes great together and that is really helpful on people who have trouble concentrating. Each slide has a great picture that goes along with it and a good amount of text that gets to the point and doesn’t give too much information. When I’m reading a power point I like to be able to glance at it and know what it going on. Not having to read entire bricks of paragraphs is a great tool. Some may argue that you did use a lot of text on your slides but I’d say it is good. When it comes down to your comments on the bottom of the page, id say you over achieved, in a good way. You let the audience know everything they needed to know about each slide. This is helpful. Some may have been discouraged by the large blocks of text though, sometimes less is better. Great job though.

Hey Kellie,

To start I absolutely love One Tree Hill! I considered doing a chat map on it but I am glad someone did. I really like your opening slide that says CHAT with One Tree Hill. I think it is really catchy that you used that. I think we can all relate to this chat map and find it interesting since most of us grew up watching the show every Tuesday night in high school. I thought your overall presentation was really good and colorful which I like because it kept my attention when looking at the pictures. They gave background to the words that you were saying, as well as help explained what you were trying to get across as well. The only suggestion that I have for your chat map is to make sure you have a citation slide to show all of your sources and where you got your information from, so its all there for us as the viewer. I like how you used the black background against the white font. It really made everything pop which is so important for power points. Your descriptions were really well written and I think each slide matched its description perfectly. Overall I think you did really well on your first chat map and will totally use yours as a guide for my own

Kellie,

I have never seen this show, but I hear all the girls talking about it. You're project sparked my interest in the show, and i might watch an episode. You're slides are very creative, and are very clear. I like how you inserted a box underneath each slide to explain it further. You're information was excellent and gave me a good understanding of the show. The only thing is that you're pictures were in the same spot in many of the slides. Other than that, great job!

Hey Kellie,

To start off, I think your cover page for your presentation does a great job at opening. Showing the entire cast of the show and incorporating the word CHAT into your title is a very clever way to open up! Not only that, but every slide after that is so well organized and looks like a very good presentation! Now, your CHAT map is jam packed with so much information, and in a lot of cases I would say you should take some of it out, but in this case I think otherwise. I think all the information that you’ve given flows really well throughout the whole presentation and leaves no room for confusion. I found all the slides interesting, mainly because I have never watch One Tree Hill before, but I’d have to say that my favorite slide was the Ecology slide. It caught my eye so quickly with the intriguing information and pictures that it introduced to me. This presentation is very well put together and looks like it had a lot of work put into it. I applaud the effort and hard work that it looks like you put into this CHAT map. You intrigued me throughout the whole presentation and it was very good.

Hey Kellie

I found your presentation very creative and informative. Unfortunately, I never really got into One Tree Hill, but your presentation was still entertaining. I like the color scheme of each of the slides in the presentation. You did a great job on organizing and formatting each slide differently without changing up the same basic color organization. It shows that you put plenty of time into this presentation because your pictures are well thought out and well placed. Your slides kept the information short and sweet, and you even provided extensive comments underneath all of your slides. These comments may have been a little excessive, however, and I would recommend possibly trying to convey your points within each slide. Maybe consider adding the citations into the presentation, whether it be from slide to slide or within its own separate slide. Great job overall though. You put together some great work.

Sincerely,

Pat

Hey Kellie,

Right of the bat your presentation is great! The organization was very well done. You were able to connect the pictures and information allowing it to flow, which is not easy! One Tree Hill was a show my sister loved! I was always too busy to keep up with the episodes, but from what I have read in your presentation the show was well worth watching. I really like how you worded your information. You were able to be professional yet still keep the attention of the readers which is also difficult considering us students try very hard to "sound proper", but sometimes lose the fun of writing which is what catches our attention to begin with. One major plus was the fact you were very detailed with your presentation. You answered all questions, which left no confusion for us. Giving that much detail can be overwhelming but you gave what was needed to be known which is awesome! I also give you props for being able to combine your love for the show and still be able to be professional about it. Sometimes we get carried away about what we know about our favorite show and not be very factual, but your sources seemed to be accurate. In all you did a great job. Your presentation was well put together and kept attention. Well done!

Great great great job! Your slides were very easy to follow and i also liked the creativity you put in on the first slide with "chat". It was very good that your slides were so neat because it made it easy to read. Never seen this show but some of my friends are pretty crazy about it so i can understand why you did the presentation on it! You did a really good job balancing the bullet points and summaries. Instead of barely anything on the slides and everything in the summary or vice versa you were able to equal it out. In the activity slide it was cool to see how the actors were able to relate to their own characters in the show. It probably makes their acting better which makes people want to watch it more. In conclusion, loved your chat map.

I want to start off by saying that your whole presentation is looking really great. I like the pictures. They are clear and interesting to look at. I like the little bit of explanation for all of the slides. It makes it more interesting. Also it helps to better understand the content of the film. The words in the text are really clear and bright. It was good to compare the movie with two other movies like the OC and the Dowson’s Creek. Like how the summary is beneath each slide and also you provide citation so that it would be easy to follow up with where the information is coming from. Also like how the information of the theme was provided because that gives me an idea of what I should be looking for as I read the presentation. On the reception slide I like how it was provided that it was the fastest growing movie and also how the audiences feel about the movie. The picture comparing the Tree Hill and the Dowson Creek was a really great idea because it helps to clarify how each of them looks like. It also helps us to follow the information you have provided. What could be strengthened would be providing more clarification on what sex sell and skin wins mean. You did a very good job with your first Hub. All the information and organization is looking good.
